Japan Relief
For weeks now we have been following the devastation in Japan, and LCIF has been there helping with the catastrophe – each day, each week, each mile along the way. I want to thank you all for the generosity of the clubs in our district – so many have given and “stepped to the plate”. Also, thank you for the personal donations that many of you have sent. Large and small, it doesn’t matter – each and every donation helps. Please encourage fellow Lions and clubs to donate whatever they can. Remember 100% of your funds will go to Japan Relief. The largest city affected by the quake is Sendai. In Sendai there were 31 Lions Clubs, yes, fellow Lions, I said “31” Lions clubs in the city of Sendai alone with many more up and down the coast. LCIF has given $125 million in grants, and to date LCIF has received donations or commitments exceeding $6 million, including $3 million that the Lions of Japan are working to raise themselves during their own crisis. Thank you all again for coming to the aid of our Japanese friends in the wake of this historic catastrophic tragedy. PDG Evie Morine District Coordinator Lions Clubs International Foundation

Leos off to a special start

Katie Corbin likes to help her community where she can. When a service club extended its reach into her Grade 11 Central Kings classroom, she signed right up. “I knew I would because I have a reason: I want to do what I can to help,” she says. Corbin is the treasurer of the new Kings Leos Club, a youth branch of Lions International being mentored by the Coldbrook & District Lions Club. The Leos were special guests at a Coldbrook dinner meeting April 28 to receive their charter, and congratulations. “We have high hopes for this club - and confidence,” said Jane Gregory, a Lawrencetown Lion and district advisor for Leos clubs. “I am so proud of Coldbrook for getting a Leos club started – and this is a special club.” Special in several ways: it’s the only Leos club in the province. It’s also the evolution of volunteer work the Lions have been doing for a few years at Central Kings with students in the life skills program. (READ MORE)
